Create a textile self-portrait with Studios Midwest artist Marina Gasparini. This workshop is in two days. Day one will take place June 29th from 11am – 1pm and June 30th from 1pm – 3pm. The workshop is free and open to the public. All details are below.

Ms. Gasparini is one of three artists participating in the 2013 Studios Midwest residency. She will be working on her art in Galesburg through mid-July. During her residency, she will be creating a textile portrait of the city and her artistic portrait of Galesburg needs the help from its inhabitants.
The Galesburg Civic Art Center will host a workshop, taught by Ms. Gasparini, so that Galesburg residents can be represented in the final installation. There will be two workshops offered – both will split the workshop sessions over two days. During the first session of the workshop, participants will be asked to create a textile self-portrait or word that answers a question posed by Ms. Gasparini. The second day of the workshop is required to complete the textile process. The first workshop sessions will take place on Saturday, June 29th at 11am and Sunday, June 30th at 1pm. The second workshop sessions will take place on Monday, July 1st at 6pm and Tuesday, July 2nd at 6pm. All workshop sessions will take place in the Blick Gallery at the Galesburg Civic Art Center. These workshops are free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not necessary, but would be appreciated. The final installation will be available for viewing on Tuesday, July 9th from 6-8pm in suite 102 at the Bondi Building located at 311 East Main St. in downtown Galesburg.

Six artists from the farthest  North of Finland on the borders with Lapponia and  Italian  Marina Gasparini, already guest of  a gallery of contemporary  art at Oulu, are the protagonists of the exhibition  in Vanna Casati‘s showroom of Bergamo.

As a whole  all the works on display  witness a world dominated by the impressive  presence of nature , considering the enchantment of magic  creatures –  either  lone wolves or bears – and  the  materials in use like tangly twigs and herbs in refined texture , which is the result of a deeply  rooted tradition in the northern world.

This artistic inspiration based on natural elements still survive almost uncorrupted owing to  the extreme  environment conditions and to  the cultural attachment to one’s roots.

The interwoven  texture of Katia Kiuru, with  her  intervention  on birch trunks; Mia Hamari’s small animal sculptures in metamorphosis ; the elegant  oniric  ink graphics with wolves and bears by  Helena Juntilla ;  the still monochrome  views of Liisa Karintaus; Marta Nerhus’  human shapes (“Portraits”) made in soft metal tangle and her fragile installations made of flax thread tightly bound with roots and twigs showing the artist’s great sensibility for nature: all these works compose the rich and various  artistic setting of the actual exhibition.

As to Marina Gasparini,  her  complex work is more ideologically involved, tied as it is to the social  themes of Indian  ecologist  Vandana  Shiva  : with levity  and  liveliness she draws writings about these subjects  with the use of bright and   colourful  threads mixing  letters and signs in an apparent chaos.

Vanna Casati
